The use of metal clasps
or precision attachments for positioning and retaining partial dentures
has been a time-honored method of restoring function and improved esthetics
for patients with missing dentition. However, clasp partials also require
comparitively strong teeth to support the stresses involved. In cases
where the patient has only a few natural teeth remaining, these stresses,
in combination with ongoing bone and tissue resorption and greatly reduced
propriosensitivity, can lead to the loss of weak or questionable dentition,
hastening the ultimate necessity for full dentures.
