Repairing Fractured Porcelain Crowns
Morley S. Rubinoff, D.D.S., Cert. Prostho.

  1. Evaluate the fractured area. Bare metal must be opaqued and a broad area of porcelain must be etched for retention of resin.
  2. Cut back porcelain to receive resin by a minimum of 2 mm around the fracture.
  3. Micro etch the cut back porcelain and exposed metal using 25-50 micron aluminum oxide abrasive. Hint: Ask the patient to close eyes when spraying abrasive.
  4. Apply C & B Metabond to bare metal according to manufacturer's instructions.
  5. Apply Porcelain etch to fractured porcelain and metal. Isolate caustic chemical with cotton rolls or rubber dam and etch for 2 minutes. Thoroughly rinse area and adjacent soft tissues after etch application.
  6. Apply silane to air-dried surface. Allow silane to air dry for 60 seconds.
  7. Apply unfilled resin and light cure. Apply appropriate resin in dentin, enamel and incisal shades. Light cure, trim and polish resin with discs, cups and polishing pastes.
  8. Alter surface texture of resin restoration similar to porcelain surface of fractured abutment.
