IPS Empress®

"This patient was first treated for enamel mottling by the author 13 years ago. The veneers followed the original shape of the teeth and the severe cant (not fully recognized until the diagnostic photographs were taken) of the smile. The overall effect provided a nicer colour but by no means the white teeth that are considered aesthetic today. Now, as an attractive, young career minded woman, she wanted a better look.

Original veneers and canted smile.   Smile restored with IPS Empress veneers and bonded composite

Empress veneers were placed for #6-11 and #27. Teeth #9, 10 and 11 were lengthened 1, 2 and 3 mm respectively. The gap caused by the rotation of #12 was closed with bonded composite and lengthened to match. The lower left cuspid was raised 2 mm with an Empress veneer.

The keys to success were the provisionals and photographs. The provisionals were made from a Diagnostic Wax-up that guided me in determining the right length given the present width of the teeth. We had to be mindful of pressure on the lower lip, phonetics and the envelope of function. On prep day, the provisionals looked good and felt good. However, after the anaesthesia wore off and with chewing, it was determined that the left lateral and cuspid had an interference. A minor adjustment made a major difference in comfort and improved appearance. Another impression was made of the revised provisionals and forwarded to Aurum Ceramic/Classic.

The results are simply fabulous. We now have the right length, surface texture, incisal translucency, height to width proportions and horizontal plane."
