IPS Empress® Crowns, Posterior PFM Bridges

“This new patient came to our office several years ago very unhappy with the condition and appearance of her natural teeth. Taking a lot of medication due to a medical condition, her dentition was rapidly deteriorating. She was troubled by extensive caries; worn down teeth and erosion; discoloured, ill-fitting bridges and a collapsed vertical. With all of this, it was no wonder that she also clenched and had serious TMJ issues - suffering from headaches, ringing in the ears and neck aches.

After watching Extreme Makeover on television, she realized that something could be done to help her. An on-line search researching her options lead her to our website and our office. After completing a comprehensive examination and a full set of diagnostic x-rays, we discussed full mouth reconstruction with her (really her only option given her oral condition), which she readily accepted.

We started by removing all of the decay on both arches, completed a number of needed root canals and placed temporary bridges. Despite all of her oral challenges, her tissue health was good. K-7 diagnostic software and a TENS unit were utilized to determine her comfortable bite position and to build a removable orthotic. Once her TMJ issues were resolved, upper and lower Diagnostic Wax-ups (built to the new vertical dimension and bite) were prepared by Aurum Ceramic/Classic showing the patient her new smile. We prepared her upper teeth using Prep Indices, Bite Stent and Siltec Provisional Stent from Aurum Ceramic/Classic and restored her upper arch with IPS Empress crowns #4-12 (I restored the molars with PFM crowns as she had posts in those teeth). A Fixed LVI Orthotic was placed on her lower arch at the same time. Once her bite was stabilized and comfortable, the Orthotic was removed and her lower arch restored with posterior PFM bridges and IPS Empress crowns on #22-27. All the restorations were beautifully crafted by Aurum Ceramic/Classic’s AE (Advanced Esthetic) team.

She was thrilled with the final result and is probably one of our best ambassadors for the practice. As she says in her testimonial about her search and the result: ‘Dr. Hadgis had the credentials I was looking for and once I met him, I knew his personality and approach would work too. Dr. Hadgis gave me a full mouth restoration. Now my teeth, my gums and my bite are healthy. Dr. Hadgis gave me reason to smile again!’”
