Veneer Preparation

  1. Anesthetize area if indicated.
  2. Take a preliminary impression.
  3. Record gingival, body and incisal shades. Note any stains or characterizations. Submit final shade of prepared tooth as well as desired final shade of restoration to laboratory.
  4. Preparation may be minimal or into dentin where necessary to achieve correct contour.
  5. Overlap of incisal edge is recommended (ensure that the labial incisal line angle is rounded and smooth).
  6. Lingual margin provides greatest strength as a butt shoulder.
  7. Labial gingival finishing line should be a chamfer placed supragingivally when a shade change is not required and subgingivally when a shade change is desired.

Crown Preparation

  1. Reduce facial and lingual surfaces by 1 mm minimum (the greater the reduction, the easier it is to mask the underlying color).
  2. Proximal surfaces should diverge 15-20º.
  3. Occlusal reduction should be a minimum of 1.5 mm over working cusps and 1 mm over non-working cusps.
  4. Any areas of undercut should be blocked out at preparation using a dentin adhesive and a direct hybrid composite.

Inlay/Onlay Preparation

  1. Fortress inlays and onlays are prepared to the same general guidelines as Fortress crowns.
  2. Interproximal reduction should be 1.0 - 1.5 mm with a butt shoulder to support the porcelain.
  3. Interproximal embrasure areas should be extended into easily accessible areas for finishing.
  4. There should be no sharp line angles and the lingual walls should be divergent by 15º or more.
  5. Cavosurface margin should be a butt joint.
