Maintain a Dry Field for Bonding
Bonded restorations have revolutionized the way dentists are able to restore teeth. Unfortunately, the bonding agents available, while possessing excellent bond strengths, are extremely technique sensitive. Ensuring a dry field is absolutely essential to successful bonding. Failure to provide a dry and uncontaminated field will result in failure: post-operative sensitivity, recurrent decay and costly remakes. A rubber dam is recommended as a barrier against oral fluids, blood and tissue. However, the interproximal rubber often interferes with the placement of the restoration and must be cut. The free rubber thus created has a tendency to collapse and come into close proximity with the bonding site. This rubber also acts as a wick, carrying moisture that contaminates the dry field. These frustrations have led some dentists to either attempt restorations without a rubber dam or to give up bonding altogether. Bond Buddy retracts the free rubber while still allowing access to the teeth to be bonded, simplifying the maintenance of a dry field.
