Repairing Fractured Porcelain Crowns
Morley S. Rubinoff, D.D.S., Cert. Prostho.
- Evaluate the fractured area. Bare metal must be opaqued and
a broad area of porcelain must be etched for retention of resin.
- Cut back porcelain to receive resin by a minimum of 2 mm around
the fracture.
- Micro etch the cut back porcelain and exposed metal using 25-50
micron aluminum oxide abrasive. Hint: Ask the patient to close
eyes when spraying abrasive.
- Apply C & B Metabond to bare metal according to manufacturer's
instructions.
- Apply Porcelain etch to fractured porcelain and metal. Isolate
caustic chemical with cotton rolls or rubber dam and etch for
2 minutes. Thoroughly rinse area and adjacent soft tissues after
etch application.
- Apply silane to air-dried surface. Allow silane to air dry for
60 seconds.
- Apply unfilled resin and light cure. Apply appropriate resin
in dentin, enamel and incisal shades. Light cure, trim and polish
resin with discs, cups and polishing pastes.
- Alter surface texture of resin restoration similar to porcelain
surface of fractured abutment.
