Opening a patient's
bite has become an integral part of many long-term treatment plans. This
is particularly true when areas of uneven distribution of occlusal forces
or incisal edges that are too delicate to survive the stress of chewing
are detected by comparing the Diagnostic Models to the laboratory-prepared
Diagnostic Wax-up (a natural-looking, three dimensional representation
of the final case). Possible solutions may include opening the bite and
rebuilding the posterior occlusion or restoring or recontouring opposing
dentition. In any of these instances, preliminary patient acclimatization
to their new vertical dimension is essential prior to any dental work.
